The path of faith is quite an impossible one to mere nature, for to walk on water, as Peter did, is beyond the power of man. The present days are difficult and it is not easy to walk aright in the maze of earth's confusion. But let us be perfectly clear that there is a path wholly pleasing to God, and faith accepts it.
It was a divine Object which led Peter to take such a path. His words were simple: "Lord, if it be thou". One Object, and one only, governed his soul: it was Christ. Faith acts on divine authority: "If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine" (Jn 7.17). Our spiritual intelligence is according to our subjection. A divine Object attracted the heart of Peter; a divine call led him to take the path, and divine power supported him in it. Peter walked on the water to go to Jesus.
Smooth let the waves of life be, Lord, or rough,
Without thine arm to lean on I must fall;
But while upheld by Thy sustaining grace,
Calmly I walk, superior to them all.
We sometimes exchange our happy view of the Lord, and the single eye of obedience, for a survey of things as they appear to us naturally. The result is that we sin. But, oh! the grace of Jesus. "And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?"
